General Studies, AS

This degree was designed for students that are either time or place bound but need to complete the Associate of Science degree for immediate employment or as the foundation for a Bachelor’s degree. The Associate of Science degree may be used to satisfy the General Education requirements of all universities and four year institutions in the Utah System of Education. Although the degree is a two-year program, students who take articulated classes, concurrent enrollment classes, or challenge tests can complete the degree in less than two years. Students will also be able to move smoothly into a Bachelor’s degree program if desired.

Availability

This program is available at the Uintah Basin Campus via the following Instruction Type(s):

Interactive Broadcast

Courses are delivered via state of the art video conferencing technology. Students meet at a designated time and location.

Face to Face

Courses are taught in a traditional setting with the professor and students participating together in the same classroom. Students meet at a designated time and place.

Online

Courses are delivered online to students all around the globe using Blackboard Vista. Students may participate any time and anywhere they have an Internet connection.

Admissions

Students are admitted into this program through the University’s regular admission process.

1. New freshmen admitted to USU in good standing qualify for admission to this major.

2. Transfer students from other institutions and from other USU majors need a 2.20 total GPA for admission to this major in good standing.

Requirements

Basic Requirements:

  • Total Credits needed for the degree: 60
  • Cumulative GPA: 2.0
  • University Studies Requirement: 27-31 credits
    • Competency = 9-10 credits
    • Breadth Requirements = 18 credits
  • Emphasis Credits in the major of choice = 29-31
  • Electives = bring total to 60 credits

Communications Literacy (CL)

(6 Credits)

English 1010 (CL) Introduction to Writing (3)
OR
AP English test of 3 or higher
OR
ACT English test of 29 or higher
OR
CLEP English Composition Test score of 500 or higher
AND
English 2010 Intermediate Writing (3)

Quantitative Literacy (QL)

(3-4 credits)

Math 1050 (QL) College Algebra (4)
OR
Stat 1040 (QL) Introduction to Statistics(4)
OR
One class that requires Math 1050 such as Math 1100
OR
AP Math score of 3 or better


Computer and Information Literacy (CIL)

(0-3 credits)

No specific course is required but students must pass a competency exam in computer and information literacy. A student may also take a course that teaches the required skills; simply passing the course does not meet the requirement. Some credit classes that teach the skills include OSS 1400 and USU 1000. The test consists of six parts and a student must successfully complete all six of the CIL tests. There is a $30 fee associated with this exam. Breadth Requirements (18 credits)

General Education breadth requirements are intended to introduce students to the nature, history and methods of different disciplines, and to help students understand the cultural, historical, and natural contexts shaping the human experience. Breadth course also focus on the important cultural, socio-economic, scientific, and technological issues of today’s global community.

Students must take a minimum of 18 credits, including at least one course from each of the six categories shown below.

Breadth American Institutions (BAI)

One of the following courses or 3 credits of approved AP or CLEP or articulated transfer work:

  • USU 1300 (BAI), U.S. Institutions (3)
  • Econ 1500 (BAI), Introduction to Economic Institutions, History and Principles (3)
  • History 1700 (BAI), American Civilization (3)
Breadth Creative Arts (BCA)

One of the following courses or 3 credits of approved AP or CLEP or articulated transfer work:

  • Music 1010 (BCA), Introduction to Music (3) or
  • THEA 1010 (BCA), Understanding Theatre (3)
Breadth Humanities (BHA)

One of the following courses or 3 credits of approved AP or CLEP or articulated transfer work:

  • USU 1320 (BHU), Civilization: Humanities (3) or
  • English 1030 (BHU)
Breadth Physical Science (BPS)

One of the following courses or 3 credits of approved AP or CLEP or articulated transfer work:

  • USU 1360 (BPS), Integrated Physical Science. (3) or
  • CHEM 1010 (BPS), Introduction to Chemistry.
Breadth Social Science (BSS)

One of the following courses or 3 credits of approved AP or CLEP or articulated transfer work:

  • USU 1340 (BSS) Social Systems and Issues (3) or
  • FHD 1500 (BSS) Human Development Across the Lifespan (3)
  • ASTE 2900 (BSS) Humanity in the Food Web (3)
  • Psy 1010 (BSS) General Psychology (3)
Breadth Life Science (BLS)

One of the following courses (3-4) credits:

  • USU 1350 (BLS) Social Systems and Issues (3)
  • BIOL 1010 (BLS) Biology and the Citizen (3)
  • NFS 1020 (BLS) Science & Application of Human Nutrition (3)
  • ANTH 1020 Biological Anthropology (3)

Exploration Requirement (3-4 credits)

Choose an additional class from one of the following General Education categories: QL, BAI, BCA, BHU, BLS, BPS, or BSS.  (Note: This additional class is required only for students whose first semester enrolled at USU is Summer Semester 2008 or thereafter.)
