
Elementary Education, BS
Students graduating in Elementary Education will be eligible for licensure in elementary school settings. Many opportunities are available for teaching throughout the United States. Our department seeks to develop leadership skills in the preparation of teachers, supervisors, curriculum specialists, and other professional personnel pursuing careers in Elementary Education. We serve over 1200 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services prepares more elementary education teachers than any other state-funded institution.

Admissions

In order to be admitted to the Early Childhood Education program, students must:
- Submit required minimum ACT scores to advisor
- Complete speech and hearing test
- Pass writing exam
- Complete Computer Information & Literacy exams (6) (after accepted to USU)
- Submit transcripts of all college credit
- Participate in small group interview
- Obtain criminal background check
Students should work closely with an advisor during the application process to ensure all requirements are met. Also, students should regularly meet with an advisor to be sure all requirements for licensure are met prior to graduation.
Requirements
Students are required to complete a student teaching practicum in a preschool program, kindergarten, and in the public schools in grades 1, 2, or 3. The major coursework consists of 80 credits. Students must maintain a minimum 2.75 GPA in the program, and grades lower than a C will not be accepted in the major.
Students majoring in Early Childhood Education are required to complete 12 credits in an area of emphasis. The area of emphasis must be chosen from the following fields: Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics/General Science, Fine Arts, Art, Music, Physical Education, Health/Wellness/ Nutrition, Foreign Language, School Library Media, or English as a Second Language.
