Early Childhood Education, BS

Early Childhood Education provides licensure to teach pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and grades one through three in elementary school. Several practicum and field experiences with children are provided, and a subject matter emphasis is selected. This major is a cooperative effort between the Department of Family, Consumer, and Human Development and the Department of Elementary Education in the School of Teacher Education and Leadership. In addition to the many job opportunities for Early Childhood Education majors, the students receive increased knowledge and skills in a subject matter which will enhance their personal and family lives.

Admissions

In order to be admitted to the Early Childhood Education program, students must:

  • Meet ACT minimum score requirements
  • Pass Speech and Hearing test
  • Pass program writing exam
  • Complete Computer Information & Literacy exams (6) (after accepted to USU)
  • Submit transcripts of all college credit
  • Obtain criminal background check clearance
  • Complete specific prerequisite coursework (minimum GPA requirements +2.75)

Requirements

Students are required to complete a student teaching practicum in a preschool program, kindergarten, and in the public schools in grades 1, 2, or 3. The major coursework consists of 80 credits. Students must maintain a minimum 2.75 GPA in the program, and grades lower than a C will not be accepted in the major.

Students majoring in Early Childhood Education are required to complete 12 credits in an area of emphasis. The area of emphasis must be chosen from the following fields: Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics/General Science, Fine Arts, Art, Music, Physical Education, Health/Wellness/ Nutrition, Foreign Language, School Library Media, or English as a Second Language.

Early Childhood Education Majors are required to take certain classes to fulfill the University Studies requirements. View the program information sheet for more information.
