USU's Rehabilitation Counselor Education program is fully accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) to provide graduate-level training in the profession of rehabilitation counseling. Rehabilitation counselors provide counseling to individuals with physical, cognitive, and psychiatric disabilities. Since 1990, RCE has prepared students to enter the field, as well as upgraded the skills and knowledge of practicing professionals. In addition to traditional on-campus courses, classes are offered through Internet-based, distance education. Those who complete either the on-campus or distance program receive a Master of Rehabilitation Counseling degree and are eligible to take the national Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) examination.
The Rehabilitation Counseling Program enjoys the highest ranking of any program at USU. The project is funded through grants from the federal Rehabilitation Services Administration.
The RCE program requires a minimum of four
semesters of full-time study. Part-time students and those enrolled as distance education students will require more time to complete the master's degree. Students obtain a Master of Rehabilitation Counseling degree by completing 48 semester hours of coursework, including a practicum and internship. While the majority of coursework can be completed via distance, distance education students are required to attned three one-week summer courses on the USU campus in Logan, Utah. Students may begin the program any semester.
For those individuals currently working as rehabilitation counselors, the program provides a means of upgrading their education. Rehabilitation counselors who have a master's degree in a related field may take specific courses in order to become eligible to take the CRC exam. These non-degree seeking students may register for courses on a space-available basis. The CRC professional certification is a legal requirement in some agencies and is becoming the professional standard for hiring and promotion.
