Early Childhood-Alternative Teacher Preparation

Utah State University, Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation, offers an alternative teacher preparation (ATP) program in Early Childhood Special Education. Courses are available online to those working with preschool-age children with disabilities throughout the state.

Availability

This program is available at the Uintah Basin Campus via the following Instruction Type(s):

Hybrid

Courses are delivered via an online or web based program (like Adobe Connect/Breeze). Students meet online at designated times.

Admissions

To be eligible for this program, participants must have a bachelor’s degree (a teaching degree is NOT required) from an accredited college or university and be employed in a Utah school district as an unlicensed preschool special education teacher. In coordination with the employing school districts, potential students must pass basic literacy and math assessments. After meeting these initial requirements, students should:

  • Complete the ATP Application for Admission (http://sper2.ed.usu.edu/ATP2/Login.aspx). Students will receive a pin number from their district to access the form.
  • Contact EC-ATP program advisor Denise Knight at (800) 522-9731. Please provide name and contact information, district information, and copies of all university transcripts.

Requirements

The EC-ATP program is available online to all Utah school districts through Adobe Connect (formerly Macromedia Breeze), a desktop video conferencing application allowing students to participate in live class meetings from any computer with a high-speed Internet connection (a dial-up modem will not work).

Students are also required to attend two week-long summer workshops. The first is a week-long orientation class the summer prior to the first year of classes. The second is a week-long Effective Practices Conference the summer following the second year of the program.

Once admitted into the EC-ATP two-year program, students receive advisement outlining the courses to take and the semesters in which they will be taken. This individual advisement is updated each summer until the program is completed.

The Early Childhood-Alternative Teacher Preparation (EC-ATP) distance education program delivers coursework leading to Utah licensing in early childhood special education. Early Childhood Special Education licensing allows educators to work with children from birth to age 5 who have disabilities.

Educators take 27-30 semester credits over a two-year period and are eligible for Public Education Job Enhancement Program (PEJEP) funding, which reimburses some tuition and textbook expenses for this practical, teacher-friendly program.
