Psychology-School Counseling, MS

The School Counseling master’s degree offered by USU’s Psychology Department trains individuals for school counseling positions in elementary, middle, and high school settings. Training is provided in the design and implementation of school-based counseling and comprehensive guidance programs.

Coursework focuses on a range of skills including individual and group counseling for diverse populations; behavior and educational assessment and intervention; career development; research and methodological foundations; and ethical, legal and professional standards. Practicum and internship placements in private and public school settings are a critical component of the School Counselor Education program.

Admissions

General admission requirements include:
  • Completed application and fee
  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited institution
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Official transcript of all university/college coursework
  • GRE/MAT exam scores (40th percentile minimum)
  • Three letters of recommendation
Required undergraduate prerequisites are Abnormal Psychology; Analysis of Behavior; and a statistics course at a 2000-level or above. Students must earn a “B” or above in these courses. Though not required, coursework in theories of learning, and developmental psychology is encouraged.
 

Requirements

The Professional School Counselor Education program is a part-time, evening program.  Students are accepted into the interactive broadcast program in odd-numbered years or into a cohort which meets in the North Salt Lake area, with live instructorship, in even-numbered years.

Students admitted to the program may take classes which originate on the Logan campus of USU and are then broadcast live, one evening per week, to sites located throughout Utah. Students admitted to either program take two three-credit hour classes each semester, one evening per week. This part-time schedule allows students to fulfill family and professional commitments while they are enrolled in the program.

Utah State University’s Department of Psychology offers a master’s-level program of study in Psychology which qualifies graduates for professional licensure in School Guidance Counseling. The program is specifically designed to train individuals for school counseling positions in grades K-12 within public and private schools in elementary, middle, and high school settings. Training is provided in the design and implementation of school-based counseling and comprehensive guidance programs. Specific coursework is formulated to train students in a broad range of skills including: individual and group counseling for diverse populations, behavior and educational assessment and intervention, research and methodological foundations, and ethical, legal and professional standards. Experiential learning in the form of practicum and internship placements in private and public school settings is a critical component of the School Counselor Education program.

The Professional School Counselor Education Program is a part-time, evening program co-sponsored by the Departments of Psychology and Distance Education. Students are accepted into the Interactive Video Conferencing (IVC) program in oddnumbered years and into a cohort which meets in the North Salt Lake area, with live instructorship, in even- numbered years. Students admitted to the IVC program may take classes which originate on the Logan Campus of USU and are then broadcast live, one evening per week, to sites located throughout Utah. Students admitted to either program take two 3-credit hour classes each semester, one evening per week.
