Agricultural Systems Technology, MS

The combined Master of Science degree in Agricultural Systems Technology offers specializations in Agricultural Extension Education, Family & Consumer Sciences Education and Extension (FCSEE), or Secondary & Postsecondary Agricultural Education. Courses are available via interactive broadcast to USU regional campuses and centers throughout the state. The program teaches skills development, program planning, and an understanding of evaluation techniques. It also requires proficiency in research methodology and statistical applications. Emphasizing a wide range of teaching and learning skills, the program allows students to specialize in teaching, extension education, and adult education. This is not a licensure program.

Courses are delivered via state of the art video conferencing technology. Students meet at a designated time and location.

Admissions

 Students must be admitted to the USU School of Graduate Studies. For current enrollment criteria and an online application, visit www.usu.edu/graduateschool/apply.

General admissions requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited institution
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Official transcript of all university/college coursework
  • GRE/MAT exam scores (40th percentile minimum)
  • Three letters of recommendation

Students must commit to completing one distance education course each semester, including summers. Continuous enrollment is expected and a 3.0 grade point average must be maintained.

Requirements

The program offers two distinct emphases. The teaching option examines the role of the teacher, the learner, and systems of formal education. The extension education option considers the use of non-formal educational systems in extension, adult, and community education.

Students conducting original research complete a Plan A thesis. The Plan C alternative requires additional coursework but no thesis.

Working professionals in education, extension, and adult and community education must be life-long learners. The combined Master of Science program in Agricultural Systems Technology with emphasis in Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Extension (FCSEE) or Secondary/Post-Secondary Agricultural Education is designed to advance teaching and learning skills in diverse educational environments, with both formal and non-formal audiences. Courses are broadcast via satellite to USU Regional Campuses and Centers throughout the state.

The program includes teaching skills development, program planning, and an understanding of evaluation techniques. However, as a graduate degree, it also requires proficiency in research methodology and statistical applications. Emphasizing a wide range of teaching and learning skills, the program allows students to specialize in teaching, extension education, and adult education and facilitates FCSE, agricultural education, religious education, and community education.

The program can be completed entirely through the Utah State University Distance Education System, depending on the courses selected for the program.
