
Mathematics Education,
This program is designed to prepare students to teach mathematics in public schools. Required courses include: mathematics content courses designed to increases students’ depth and breadth knowledge of mathematics, a course in math teaching methods where students learn research-based techniques for effectively teaching mathematics to secondary school students, and courses in pedagogy help students to learn how to measure and evaluate achievement of learning goals, implement technology into the classroom, manage a safe and comfortable learning environment, and interact with diverse learners.
All of the courses required by the major are broadcast statewide at times convenient for those with daytime jobs.
Upon completion, graduates will be certified, with a level-4 Math Endorsement, to teach in Utah secondary schools.

This program is available at the Uintah Basin Campus via the following Instruction Type(s):
Courses are delivered via state of the art video conferencing technology. Students meet at a designated time and location.
Admissions
Before enrolling in STEP courses, you must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program. Criteria include completion of at least 60 semester credits, plus the following:
- Completion of General Education and University Studies requirements, completed CIL exams, and a minimum GPA of 2.75 (must be maintained through graduation)
- A speech and hearing test
- Successful completion of the Teacher Education Writing Exam
- Recommendations from advisors in major (requires a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in Math 1210, 1220, 2210) and minor fields
- Submission of a criminal background check (a legislative mandate)

Please note that students must pass Praxis II Content Exams in their teaching fields before being advanced to student teaching.
Requirements
Requirements for the Mathematics Education Degree require:
- USU General Education/University Studies Depth Education requirements (or an associates degree plus USU Depth Education requirements)
- College of Science Core Requirements—Math 1210, Math 1220, and a two-semester sequence in either Biology, Chemistry, Geology, or Physics
- Content courses encompassing a variety of topics in Mathematics and Statistics (39 credits)
- An approved teaching minor (chosen by student)
- Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP)—a series of courses relating to pedagogy culminating with a student teaching experience. Math Ed students are exempt from INST 3500 (34-36 credits, including methods courses and clinical experiences in both major and minor)
Certain courses may satisfy more than one requirement spread across the various categories described above. Accordingly to get through the program in the most efficient manner possible requires careful planning and advisement.
